Make a simple pamphlet binding
A 20-minute first project — a single-signature pamphlet stitch using a three-hole sewing pattern. The best place to start book-binding.
A pamphlet stitch is a single-signature binding sewn through three or five holes with one length of thread. It is the simplest binding in existence, makes a finished 48-page notebook in 20 minutes, and teaches the two skills that every other binding depends on: folding a signature and sewing a kettle-stitched knot.
Materials
| Item | Specification | Quantity | |---|---|---| | Paper | 100–120gsm, A4 | 12 sheets | | Cover card | 250gsm kraft, A4 | 1 sheet | | Waxed linen thread | 18/3 | 40cm | | Bookbinding needle | Size 18 | 1 | | Bone folder | Any | 1 | | Awl | Any | 1 |
Steps
- Fold every sheet in half widthwise. Stack the 12 folded sheets inside one another to make a single signature of 48 pages.
- Fold the cover card the same way and wrap it around the signature.
- Mark three piercing stations along the fold: one at the centre, and one 4cm from each end.
- Open the book to the centre and pierce through all layers at each station with the awl.
- Thread the needle with 40cm of waxed linen. Do not knot the end.
- Enter from the inside at the centre station, leaving a 10cm tail inside.
- Exit to the outside, run the thread along the spine, and re-enter at the top station.
- Cross the spine on the outside to the bottom station, re-enter to the inside.
- Exit again at the centre, making sure to skip the long thread so you do not trap it.
- Tie a square knot with the tail around the long spine thread. Trim to 1cm.
What to watch for
- If the knot is loose, the signature will shift. Pull firmly but not enough to pucker the paper.
- Thread tangles when it is longer than 50cm. Keep the working length short.
- Piercing through a thick signature off-axis creates angled stations. Use a cradle or press down flat before piercing.
FAQ
How long does a pamphlet binding take?
20 minutes for a first attempt, 10 minutes by the third. The folding and piercing take longer than the sewing itself.
What paper works best for a pamphlet?
100–120gsm. Thinner paper warps at the spine; thicker paper cracks when folded into a signature of 12 sheets.
Can I use the pamphlet stitch for a bigger book?
Not really — past 16 folded sheets the signature gets too thick to pierce cleanly. For a larger book use Coptic binding instead.
What thread length do I need?
40cm for a three-hole pamphlet. For a five-hole version, 60cm.
