15 best handmade journals in India in 2026
A ranked buyer's guide to the best hand-bound journals made in India this year — by paper, binding style, price, and who they suit.
By Ananya Rao
A handmade journal is a stitched notebook bound by a single person using folded paper signatures, waxed-linen thread, and a cover of board, fabric, or leather. In 2026, independent Indian studios have become good enough — and priced keenly enough — that the best handmade journal in India costs less than a mid-range imported notebook.
How we ranked them
We scored each journal on five factors: paper quality (gsm and feathering), binding durability, lay-flat behaviour, cover craftsmanship, and price-to-page-count. Scores are out of 10. Prices below are the listed INR in April 2026.

Which one suits whom
- Fountain pen users: Secret Belgian at 100–120gsm — ink does not ghost and the book opens flat enough to write across the gutter.
- Watercolour and ink wash: Accordion or Coptic with 200gsm watercolour paper. Anything under 140gsm will cockle.
- Pocket-carry daily journal: A 14x20cm Coptic or Japanese-stab softcover. Under 300g, fits in a tote.
- Gifting: A block-printed cover with a handwritten colophon card. Price INR 1,800 to 2,800 tends to land well.
What to avoid
Machine-bound books labelled "handmade" because the paper is hand-sheeted. If the spine is glued and hot-stamped, the binding is industrial — no matter how the paper was pulped.
Where to buy and what to read next
Our own journals are listed in the books shop; the supplies list behind them lives in the bookbinding beginner shopping list. If you want to make one, start with what you need to start book binding.
FAQ
What is a handmade journal?
A handmade journal is a notebook whose paper has been folded into signatures and stitched by hand, usually with waxed linen thread, rather than glued in a factory.
How much should a handmade journal cost in India?
Expect INR 650 for a small pamphlet-bound notebook, INR 1,500 to 2,500 for an A5 Coptic or Secret Belgian with 120–160 pages, and INR 3,000+ for 192 pages of cotton-rag paper.
Are handmade journals good for fountain pens?
Yes, if the paper is 100gsm or above and cotton-blend. 120gsm mixed-media is the safest default.
Do handmade journals come with lines or dots?
Most studios print to order — plain, dot-grid, or ruled. Ask before you buy; not every seller offers ruling on cotton-rag.
